Gerard Malanga, MD

Dr. Malanga is the Founder and Partner of New Jersey Sports Medicine, LLC and New Jersey Regenerative Institute in Cedar Knolls, New Jersey. He has served as Director of Pain Management at Overlook hospital and Director of Research of Atlantic Sports Health. He is Board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine and Pain Medicine. He completed a sports medicine fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. and served as  a Senior Associate Consultant at Mayo Clinic from 1993-1996 and Director of Sport, Spine and Orthopedic Rehabilitation and Fellowship director at Kessler Institute from 1997-2004.


Dr. Malanga has expertise in the nonoperative treatment of a variety of orthopedic disorders including neck and back pain as well as shoulder, knee, and other sport medicine and musculoskeletal problems. His expertise includes EMG testing; spinal and joint injections, musculoskeletal ultrasound and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment.


DR. Malanga provides sport medicine services to several local NJ high school and colleges and has served as the head team physician of New Jersey City University since 1999. He also serves as a consultant to the Rutger's University Athletic Department as well. His practice includes the treatment of recreational to Olympic and Professional level athletes.


Dr. Malanga has published three textbooks entitle: “Whiplash” and “Scientific Evidence of Musculoskeletal Physical Examination” and recently completed the definitive  textbook on musculoskeletal ultrasound injections: Atlas of Muscuskeletal Ultrasound-guided Injection Procedures. He has published over 70 articles and 25 book chapters regarding various musculoskeletal issues from the treatment of neck and back pain to Ultrasound and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections. He has lectured throughout the country and abroad on a variety of sports medicine, spine, orthopedic and pain management topics. He has been a member of the Physiatric Association of Sports Spine and Occupational Rehabilitation (PASSOR) board serving in many positions in the past and presented the “PASSOR Legacy Award” in 2012. He was recently named Chair of the AAPM&R's Regenerative Task Force.


He is a member of the North American Spine Society, American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM); International Spinal injection Society (ISIS);American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP); International Cellular Medicine Society (ICMS);International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS); American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM) and the American Pain Society. He is the founding member of the Orthobiologic Consortium which is dedicated to the collaboration of clinicians who are actively involved in treating musculoskeletal disorders using biologic treatments (e.g. PRP, nucleated cells/MSCs, etc.) who are willing to share clinical experiences, critical review of evolving literature and findings of laboratory/industry innovations that will result in improved and more standardized protocols in the delivery of these treatments and facilitate meaningful research.


He has been chosen “Top Doctor” in the New York Metro Area; “NJ Monthly” Best Doctors in New Jersey,” Inside Jersey” Best Doctors, “New York Magazine” Best Doctors; and Best Doctors in America multiple times since 2004. He was selected as a member of the Physician honor society “Apha Omega Alpha” in 2004.


Dr. Malanga is a Diplomat of the American College of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine; and board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pain Medicine and Sports Medicine.
